WHY CHOOSE SHS FOR MY CHILD?
Your
interest in Sacred Heart School is evidence that you are committed
to doing the very best you can for your child. SHS provides a
wonderful combination of committed educators who are professionals
in their educational specialties and, at the same time, are
experienced in fostering the development of the total child. Many
of our teachers are graduates of Sacred Heart School themselves and
have sent their own children here. Many SHS alumni continue to send
their children here because each child is given an education marked
by excellence in learning and is regarded as an individual with
special gifts, talents, and abilities.
Whether your child is a three- or four-year old ready for
Pre-kindergarten, a five-year-old looking forward to Kindergarten,
or an older child who wants a friendly, family atmosphere for
learning, you will want to look at all that Sacred Heart has to
offer.
At Sacred Heart School:
-
First and foremost, SHS provides daily opportunities to live and
learn our faith while fostering and affirming solid moral and
family values.
-
The curriculum provides a strong foundation in the basics and
builds academic enrichment through special activities and
programs.
-
Leadership is fostered through classroom and school
responsibilities, service projects, student government, and
other age-appropriate activities.
-
Service to the school and the wider community give children a
sense of using their talents to help others.
-
Parental involvement is encouraged.
-
The challenging curriculum encourages eager students to do their
best and provides reluctant learners with safety nets to
ensure a positive educational experience for each child. The
strength of the curriculum is evident in the results of
standardized IOWA tests that show students consistently scoring
at or above the norm for their grade levels.
HOW ARE WORKING PARENTS
HELPED?
In
addition to the daily academic program, SHS provides Extended Day
Care for families from 6:30AM to 8:00AM at the beginning of the day,
and from 2:30PM to 5:00PM at the end of the day.
The
benefits of Extended Day Care are many:
-
The need for
additional day care off-site is eliminated, even when school is
in session for only a half-day.
-
While
Pre-kindergarten is a half-day, parents may opt for Extended
Care lasting a full day for their three- or four-year-old
children.
-
Parents can feel
confident that their children are in a familiar, safe, and
secure setting.
-
Children have an
opportunity to complete their homework, have a snack, play
outdoors or indoors, and watch videos specifically designed for
their level.
-
Children are
supervised by a permanent staff member, Sister Mary Esther.
Pre-kindergarten is
offered for Three- and Four-year-old Children.
A strong curriculum will
engage your young child within a school setting that supports
creativity, play-as-learning, and special activities. The
Pre-kindergarten experience is available five mornings each week.
If your child needs Extended Care for part or most of the remainder
of the day, that can be arranged as well.
SHS
offers a full day of kindergarten.
Five-year-olds have a full day of learning activities and fun as
they become accustomed to the school day – a great help for them
when they begin first grade!
Volunteer opportunities, employing a variety talents and
abilities, give all the parents a chance to get involved in their
child's education and play an active role in the school family.
HOW CAN WE BE SURE OF
QUALITY?
Sacred
Heart School has a fine history and a bright future. It received
accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and
Colleges in 1995 and then was re-accreditated in November of 2005.
Believing in a strong foundation in traditional skills, the
Sacred Heart School Curriculum builds upon each level to provide
students with a comprehensive learning experience that enriches the
intellect, strengthens abilities, and capitalizes on individual
talent. Teachers acknowledge that there are many learning styles
that benefit students depending on their orientation. Classrooms
make the best use of a variety of learning experiences so that each
student will feel both successful in what has been accomplished and
challenged to acquire even greater insight or skill.
Sacred
Heart School utilizes computer technology as a valuable tool in
accomplishing its mission. A broad, school-wide plan is in place
that embraces modern information technologies.
The Value of Catholic Education
The
time was 1606 – before the Declaration of Independence, before even
the Mayflower Compact. The place was the area that would become St.
Augustine, Florida. The event was the first Catholic School on our
shores – begun by Franciscans to educate children in Christian
doctrine, reading, and writing.
For
four hundred years, Catholic education has contributed to the
development of individuals and society. And today, at our own
Sacred Heart School, that tradition has been continued and augmented
so that today’s children are educated in the best way possible.
The
early Catholic educators could never have envisioned the needs and
demands of educating children in contemporary society, nor could
they have envisioned computers and electronics that are matters
taken for granted today.
What
the early Catholic educators gave us, however, is the call to
educate our children for lives of leadership and service, to enhance
their ability to solve problems and make decisions, to develop the
intellectual acumen to support our democracy, to meet the demands of
the time in which we live, and to preserve the commitment to the
Gospel message that is the foundation for all we do.
At SHS
today, religion classes are taught daily and students participate in
prayer services and attend Mass monthly and on Holy Days. At SHS,
students learn about their religion and also practice it.
SHS
also welcomes children from a variety of religious and cultural
backgrounds with the understanding that Catholic religion classes
are part of the daily curriculum in all grades.

Non-Catholic parents who want an educational curriculum coupled with
a Christian ethical code and moral compass are invited to explore
what SHS has to offer them and their children.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Sacred
Heart is a Catholic Elementary School supported in part by Sacred
Heart Parish in New Britain, CT. Tuition costs are kept as
reasonable as possible so that education at Sacred Heart is
available, affordable, and accessible to children and their
families. The tuition payments made by families do not cover the
entire cost of educating a child at Sacred Heart. Further, families
who belong to the parish and contribute to the financial support of
the church, pay a reduced cost tuition based on their parish
participation. Sacred Heart School also offers financial assistance
and tuition payment plans to assist families in budgeting for
Catholic education.
The cost of educating a child at Sacred Heart School far exceeds the
tuition that parents are required to pay. As a Catholic school, SHS
believes that we must be available, accessible, and affordable for
parents who want a Catholic education for their children. Each
parent’s tuition costs will depend on whether the family is
registered in the parish.
